With friendship in mind, one of my favorite ways to cultivate purpose in my creations is by thinking of them as love letters: love songs, love poems and/or love stories.
When I’m feeling weak, I make Love Letters FROM (our) Nature. In my time of need, I imagine that nature understands me completely, encourages me entirely, offers wisdom humbly, and cares for me unconditionally.
When I’m feeling strong, I make Love Letters TO (our) Nature by offering admiration for its gifts and resilience. As a mirror, when I praise and admire nature, I’m also praising and admiring the parts of me that are reflected by it. In this way, love letters to (our) nature are expressions of self-love too.
Over time, this practice has broadened the space of my heart in ways that have helped me to heal the wounds and confusions that I’ve carried from romantic love. As I create love songs and tell love stories that include more of the world around me, the pains, insecurities, and inadequacies that have come from romantic love are superseded with confidence in the love that I’m growing through my service. No longer distracted by a hungry heart, I am filled with the joy and gratitude that is naturally reflected by that which I serve (and those with whom I serve).
With the world as a mirror, love for one is love for all.
