I wrote this next song after I volunteered to support the biodiversity of the wetlands in Utah through the removal of a noxious weed called Dyer’s Woad.
Thanks to all the volunteers of the Swaner Preserve who show up to support the knowing that needing each other is a beautiful thing.
You can see us in action in the music video that I made of the day:
I come from a culture that’s focused on independence, where doing-things-on-your-own has been lauded for the right to call your very own shots, to be safe from folks always who mess up. But, while comfort can come from the independent endeavor (and self-determination is something I treasure), aiming for alone hasn’t been easy. I’ve felt inadequate and disconnected, hesitant to receive life’s sweet presents. Gratitude has felt far away as shame cast its shadows on love sent my way. But learning about ecosystems has made me appreciate how much I need 'um: Everything has its niche as it gives itself naturally, and as we give of ourselves, we're supported freely. The reflections of biodiversity have been a big relief in times when my ability hasn't matched the need: hurt, tired, or lacking the skill, it helps to be cared for when I fall ill. No longer down on myself for not being enough, I give thanks for those who show up. Meanwhile, I focus on what I can offer, which makes it a joy to be in this together. Love has blossomed where we’re matched perfectly; what a gift it is to be your puzzle piece.
